Your family is eagerly heading to a relative’s house for a holiday gathering, the car filled with carefully prepared dishes. You proudly place a large casserole of cheesy lasagna and a bowl of cranberry sauce in the backseat, securing it with the seatbelt. The kids chatter excitedly, jostling in their seats, when suddenly, a sharp turn sends the casserole sliding and tumbling. The lid pops off, and steaming lasagna oozes onto the seats while the cranberry sauce splashes like a crimson wave, painting the upholstery. The car fills with gasps, groans, and the unmistakable smell of holiday chaos as your family scrambles to clean the mess before arriving empty-handed and red-faced.
Want to avoid this type of scenario at all costs? Keep food dishes safe and sound with these 5 tips when traveling with food. (see the full video here)
5 Tips When Traveling with Food
1. Use a Bungee Cord to Keep Your Slow Cooker’s Lid on Tight
Slow cookers are a great way to keep your food hot or to make it easy to heat up when you get to your party. Keep that lid secure by tightly hooking each end of the bungee cord to the slow cookers side handles.
2. Use A Yoga Mat or Shelf Liners to Prevent Food from Sliding
Line the trunk or back seat before you place any dishes in your car so food doesn’t slip and slide while you’re on the road.
3. Use A Storage Bin and Cooling Rack to Carry Multiple Dishes.
Place one of your dishes on the bottom of the bin, set a cooling rack on top, then set another dish or other dishes on top. You may even be able to put a second rack in, too. It’s a great way to carry all of your food at once into the party and helps avoid multiple trips to and from the car.
4. Line a Plate With Paper Towels or a Cute Kitchen Towel to Stop Cookies From Sliding.
Place your cookies on top of the towel, cover with plastic wrap, and voila! Your cookies will stay in place.
5. Use Painters Tape to Keep Lids in Place
Simply tape the lid securely to the baking dish. The tape wont leave residue on the dish, and the food won’t spill out and leave residue in your car.
Now you can pack and be ready to go knowing your food is safe and your car is clean!
